Rhinos set for Elland Road sellout
by Peter Smith
LEEDS RHINOS officials today predicted they are on track to sell out Elland Road for the Carnegie World Club Challenge showdown with Australian champions Canterbury Bulldogs
Tickets for the February 4 clash went on general sale yesterday and Rhinos are reporting record demand. "We had queues all last week, when tickets were on sale to season ticket holders, Leedsline agents and Rhinos 2000 members," said chief executive Gary Hetherington. "We sold 9,000 in the first week and that is unprecedented. It is beyond everybody's expectations and very positive. "There is already a lot of interest in the game and we are hoping to test the 39,000 capacity. "Usually there is a lot of interest in the few weeks leading up to the game, but to sell so many tickets this early is a real positive." Hetherington is confident Great Britain's Gillette Tri-Nations humiliation by Australia at Elland Road last month will not have an adverse affect on the World Club Challenge gate. He said: "Inevitably the Tri-Nations final left everybody in a state of disappointment and that will take some getting over, but there is a lot of anticipation for what is the start of the 2005 season. "It will be a really big start to the season and there is real interest inthe game. We hope that is going to be generated and maintained throughout the whole region. "Historically the World Club Challenge is supported by fans of the competing teams, but it is being staged in Leeds for the first time and we are looking for the whole city to get behind it. "It is a world-class international event and the early signs are that the whole game is getting behind it. It is England versus Australia and there is a lot at stake. "It is a one-off chance to become world club champions and the interest in the game reflects that." Meanwhile, Hetherington said Rhinos remain on course for record season ticket sales in Super League X. Tickets for the pre-season games against York City Knights at Bootham Crescent on January 3 and the Lazenby Cup clash with Hunslet Hawks at South Leeds Stadium on January 30 go on sale tomorrow.
GREAT Britain Students face Australia at Dewsbury's Ram Stadium tomorrow in the opening game of a two-Test series. The Australian team is drawn from colleges and universities throughout Australia and includes former Manly Sea Eagles star Brendan Reeves, who has played at NRL first-grade level. The Australians currently hold the Academic Ashes after their series win on home soil last summer. Tomorrow's game kicks off at 7.30pm and admission is £3, including programme. l Hunslet Hawks Lifeline: A8506 – K Rose; A4626 – I Spurr; A0037 – S Micklefield; A2105 – K Smith; B1018 – J Harper.
